Sakhi Sewa Samaj (सखी सेवा समाज) was started in 2068 B.S. by eleven women — teachers, a nurse, a lawyer and a Mithila painter — who met every Saturday in a Janakpur courtyard to help girls in their neighbourhood stay in school. “Sakhi” means a trusted friend, and that is still how we work.
Today we are a registered, non-political NGO affiliated with the Social Welfare Council, working in eight districts of Madhesh Province. Every programme is planned with the ward office and run alongside a women’s group the village itself elects.
Each area of work is shaped by the women’s groups we partner with, and every activity is planned with the ward office so it lasts beyond a single project.
